Discover what to bring for your Amazon adventure! Uakari Lodge’s essential packing guide for a smart and sustainable trip. Clothing, footwear, gear and what to avoid in order to protect nature.

Packing for a trip to the Amazon rainforest requires special attention. In general, you’ll need lightweight, long-sleeved clothing, comfortable walking shoes, biodegradable insect repellent and sunscreen, as well as practical accessories like a hat, sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle. Choosing sustainable items is key to preserving this unique ecosystem.
Regardless of where you stay, what time of year you travel, or what type of experience you’re planning, how you pack directly impacts both your journey and the environment around you.
This practical guide, prepared by the Uakari Lodge team, offers everything you need to pack wisely for your trip to the Amazon — taking into account the region’s tropical climate, ecotourism activities, and sustainable practices that help protect this extraordinary natural sanctuary.
Whether you’re visiting during the flood season (May to July) or the dry season (September to November), these recommendations will help ensure your safety, comfort, and an authentic experience in harmony with the forest and the traditional riverside communities.
What to Bring to the Amazon Rainforest

Lightweight, breathable, long-sleeved clothing
Humidity in the Amazon can reach up to 90%, so it’s important to choose fabrics that allow airflow. We recommend quick-drying nylon or polyester shirts with built-in UV protection.
Neutral colors like beige, olive green, or light gray not only help you stay cool in the tropical heat, but also serve as camouflage for wildlife observation.
Proper footwear
A lightweight sneaker or comfortable hiking boot is ideal for trails. Bring sandals or flip-flops for downtime at the lodge.
Quick packing checklist:
2–3 long-sleeved shirts (preferably quick-drying with UV protection)
1–2 lightweight trekking pants (mosquito-resistant if possible)
1–2 pairs of shorts (for relaxing at the lodge)
3–4 pairs of socks (trekking and cotton)
Swimsuit (for swimming in the river, if conditions permit)
Lightweight hiking shoes or boots
Flip-flops or sandals
Essential Gear and Accessories

Compact rain jacket or lightweight anorak — even in the dry season, showers can occur
Hat or cap + sunglasses
Biodegradable insect repellent and sunscreen
Reusable water bottle — Uakari Lodge provides filtered water for refills, reducing plastic waste
Headlamp or handheld flashlight
Travel adapter (check compatibility before your trip)
Dry bags — ideal for protecting electronics and documents from humidity
Small daypack — for personal items during excursions
Basic first-aid kit — Uakari Lodge has one on site, but if you’re staying elsewhere, check what is provided
Bonus tip:
Bring binoculars and a camera — not essential, but highly recommended. Birdwatching and wildlife observation are among the most rewarding activities in the region, and these tools will help you capture unforgettable moments.
At Uakari Lodge, we have some binoculars available for hire, but not all lodges do.
What Not to Bring to the Amazon

Strong perfumes or scented cosmetics — These can attract insects and disturb wildlife, as well as affect the fragile balance of the ecosystem
Bright or fluorescent clothing — Vibrant colors can disrupt wildlife observation and contrast with the natural environment
Single-use plastics or excess packaging — Use reusable containers and avoid bringing plastic bags. Any waste brought in should be brought out with you
Electronics without humidity protection — The rainforest is naturally humid, so use waterproof cases or dry bags to protect your gear
Unauthorized drones — In many areas, including the Mamirauá Reserve, drones are restricted. They disturb wildlife and can interfere with the peace of local communities
Remember: In the Amazon rainforest, less is more. Less weight in your luggage, less environmental impact. More room for connection, awareness, and wonder.
However, should your luggage exceed 15kg, at Uakari Lodge we can store it securely in our office in the city of Tefé.
